Some Interesting Facts About Mercury

Mercury

Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System and the closest to the Sun. Its orbit around the Sun takes 87.97 Earth days, the shortest of all the Sun's planets.

From the surface of Mercury, the Sun would appear more than three times as large as it does when viewed from Earth, and the sunlight would be as much as seven times brighter. Despite its proximity to the Sun, Mercury is not the hottest planet in our solar system – that title belongs to nearby Venus, thanks to its dense atmosphere.

What does Mercury look like? Here you can see that Mercury is a light grey color. This is Mercury's northern horizon as seen by the MESSENGER spacecraft during its third flyby.

Along with Venus, Earth, and Mars, Mercury is one of the rocky planets. It has a solid surface that is covered with craters like our Moon. It has a thin atmosphere, and it doesn't have any moons. Mercury likes to keep things simple.

Mercury is a terrestrial planet having three main layers: a core, mantle and crust.

It is the least explored inner planet. As of 2015, the Mariner 10 and MESSENGER missions have been the only missions that have made close observations of Mercury.
